Evil Dead: The Musical
nacho:
So...Evil Dead Rises is a fucking embarrassing insult. They're influenced by the source material only in that someone in their 20s might have sat down at one point and watched the trailers for the first three movies, then filled in the blanks from there. Like, literally, every catch phrase is from the old trailers. Nothing deeper track than that.
It lacks the humor of the original by 110%, and it also misses the whole point of the strong hero. Here it's all hopeless and sad and gory and violent. We get a last girl, but it's not a new Bruce Campbell. She's more or less the last girl because the ham-fisted fuckery of a script knows there has to be a last girl. As in, she's surviving because they need her to survive for their thin excuse of a narrative and not because of her wits or sheer bloody-mindedness.
We get save the cat roughly every five minutes. Which gets annoying fast.
Puzzling because they have an old shotgun-wielding dude as their neighbor and it feels like, long before this script got raped by the studio, that that character was supposed to be Bruce Campbell and they maybe wanted to do a torch-handing to the new girl. I would have been completely on board with that. But, like every single agonizing moment of this fucking ass-suck movie, it's a wasted opportunity.

Oh, that's disappointing to hear.
Also, everyone I know under the age of 30 loved this movie. I think this says something about how tastes have shifted, and that we're old fuddy-duddies now.

Dude, this is a 70s franchise. Within The Woods was 78, and Evil Dead proper was 80. So I would say tastes have indeed shifted. And.....that's fine. I would have preferred a well handled full-on remake (like they tried to do in 2013) over this... Evil Dead Rise is obsessed with the source material but doesn't understand it. Something ED2013 avoided in favor of doing a "re-imagining."
So, basically, we're looking at a Prometheus vs. the source material situation here.
