This was bad, too! Short stories from someone who is usually a long form SFF author, and she couldn't handle it. She even spends her 10 page intro apologizing for it. Sad.

Now, on to the latest Becky Chambers, which is as fantastic as everything else she does.  To Be Taught, If Fortunate

On to Here and Now and Then

Man, people raved and raved about this book, but it's stereotypical time travel shit that's so obsessed with Doctor Who it almost becomes meta at times. Blah.

Moving on to the first Hannibal Lecter book! Red Dragon

Red Dragon the book is far better than either of the film versions. (Though I have a *very* soft spot in my heart for Michael Mann's Manhunter.) Silence of the Lambs (the book and the movie) is better than all versions.

So... The Red Dragon reboot is almost scene by scene with the book. I was surprised. I figured Manhunter would have been the closer film, given it's age and pedigree and the fact that I'm super jaded about all reboots and remakes.

Yeah, they took out some of the stuff that humanized the Tooth Fairy (and dehumanized Crawford and Graham), but that didn't upset me too much. It would have been hard to movie that stuff up.

After reading the book, I am now a Red Dragon remake movie apologist. Because they tried.

Which is sad because I, too, have a soft spot for Manhunter. But I now see that was more Mann and less Thomas Harris.

Is this the first time in this 15 year old thread where you've read a book on my list before I did?

Moving on to high fantasy! With a djinn twist. So far it's awesome. A real departure from the standard fantasy (even though it's still doing standard fantasy, which is fun).

Catching up! So I read Silence of the Lambs. Man, Thomas Harris doesn't know how to end a book, eh? This is the third book of his I've read -- Black Sunday has a bizarre homage to Dr. Strangelove in the end, Red Dragon is a slow dissolution into yawn-worthyness, and Silence of the Lambs is ham-handed and silly and oooovvveeer looong at the end.

But, damn, his first and second acts are amazing.

Then I read Auberon, the first of several novellas before we get the final Expanse book. Amazing, as usual.

Now moving on to the sequel of this amazing book, Kingdom of Copper

Have you read Hannibal? It suffers from the same problem, but when it finally gets to the end... hoo boy. Completely different than the movie they made and in my mind, much better.

After three of his books I don't have the stomach for more.
