So, yes. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was dreadful reading as an adult. So sad.

Moving on to the so far very amazing The Vorrh. Capably written modern fantasy.

The Vorrh got really bad really fast... Very unhappy with the book. The author threw everything, and the kitchen sink, into it. Far too taken with being novel.

Next up is another one I';m quitting. The Bastard Legion. By Chapter two, the author is obviously obsessed with Spielberg turning the book into a movie. Too precious by far.

Man... Really having trouble getting back into the reading saddle. I feel like the horrible quality of LotR from an adult's POV has ruined reading for me!

Diddums.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.

Oh, good. Found something I like!

A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe

Janky at first because it's this insane mashup of high fantasy, spell-caster bullshit in a gritty BSG sci-fi universe. So, like, it took me 40 pages to adapt to this and...now we're having nothing but candy cane fun!

This month I read The Twelve, the second book in The Passage trilogy. Justin Cronin needs to learn how to end his books better.

Now moving on to Vicious...which is awesome so far!

Vacation reading was Coffin Road. I used to really like Peter may, but he's starting to write by numbers at this point. Scottish backdrop, troubled investigator, twisty mystery that, at this point, isn't really twisty.

After that, I moved on to the penultimate book in the Expanse series, Tiamat's Wrath. I have to admit...I am still struggling with the 30 year time jump.

My god, The Expanse titles have been consistently amazing for eight books now. Wonderful read.

Moving on to a friend's book now -- nonfiction/travel/memoir/off the grid living: Rough Beauty

Moving on to adventure!

The Lost City of the Monkey God

This is like a better written version of The Lost City of Z. Absolutely page-turning and addictive so far.

Yeah, this was amazing.

Moving on now to Lune: New Moon, the final book in a trilogy about corporate espionage and civil war on a future moon. It's been an awesome, fun, complicated series... But I can definitely tell at the start of book three that it's time for the author to let go and move on.

Yeah, the Luna trilogy ended poorly. Sad.

Moving on to candy corn now -- The Charlemagne Pursuit. Mindless adventure from Steve berry, who always delivers. I need my head to cool down after reading a thousand contest entries...

Vacation reading!

Black Sunday - there's a 1977 movie about this. Very fast, fun read from the Hannibal Lector writer. Whee...

And some Roman history adventure porn! Cicero's sage as consul and in his final years:

Conspirata and Dictator
