Ayn Rand makes a lot of sense in the descriptive sense, but I truly disagree with her books as valid prescriptive advice.

She's sort of an anti-socialist...so I can see why that would rub you the wrong way.  Not that you're a socialist, but I think you lean more that way than an individualist.

I think we've already had the discussion where no one likes her but me.  And I really haven't finished Atlas Shrugged.  I enjoyed The Fountainhead much more (enough to finish it..haha).

I believe Nacho's comment was: "No one reads Ayn Rand except crying women." Or something.

I'm absolutely a socialist, although I'm sure your imagination defines socialism quite differently than I do.  I also believe very very strongly in individual responsibility (as in, don't wait for anything) -- regardless of society and the state.

I'm not really interested in Rand, but I have problems with her (male and female) followers' attitudes.  Her movement also seems to harp on weak people vs strong people, which I find very distasteful.
"If it were up to me I would close Guantánamo not tomorrow but this afternoon... Essentially, we have shaken the belief that the world had in America's justice system... and it's causing us far more damage than any good we get from it."

Well, I generally try to avoid letting my imagination define things for me.  I'm comfortable with attributing the ideas at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism to Socialism.  Do you use something radically different than the definition of socialism to mean socialism?

I have problems with her views on male and female roles and interactions.  I don't know any Rand followers personally.  I do find her emphasis on strong people not helping weak people to be distasteful.  I think it is important for our society that strong people help weak ones.  I guess Rand would say that when there are too many weak ones society will eat itself.  And that is a concern of mine, because when the government starts to mandate who is strong and how much they will help...where does it end?

I let my imagination define my philosophy all the time.

Damned commies.
There will come a day for every man when he will relish the prospect of eating his own shit. That day has yet to come for me.

yeah, happened to my girlfriend's cousin who was working in Hawaii for awhile.  She and her boyfriend saved up, bought a return ticket early, then the carrier went out of business.  No refund, so they had to add on 3 months to their stay to save up again.  I'd also start in with her description about Hawaii is turning into a shrinking black whole of culture and how their tourism dollars are going to shrivel up and eventually will be more of a burden to the US than a blessing, but that's for another day and time when I can remember all the details.
