DC Metro: The money's gone, and we're going to punish you

The latest news is that metro will be looking to "drastically cut hours of service" and even pursue complete station shutdowns except for during rush hours (with 20 stations across the system being impacted).

They're deep in the death spiral. It's amazing.

This level of service interruption unprecedented in a major city. I'm curious as to what the long term effects will be. i know it's all done in the name of improvement, but it's going to shift people's habits dramatically.

Starting Saturday half the Red Line shuts down. If I were still living in Silver Spring, my life would be a nightmare.

As it is, my life will remain just a bad dream.

The St. Petersburg Metro blast is my number one fear during my commute. The DC Metro is wide open to shit like this. Even when they do attempt to institute an illusion of security, it's spot checks at best and all you have to do is go a few miles to the next station.

Of course, there's no real way to better defend the system, I guess. To be fair. Still, though. I'll go weeks without seeing a transit cop. So even the simple deterrent of having a police presence isn't a thing.

Every once in a while someone gets stabbed to death in broad daylight on a crowded platform in the suburbs by an assailant who somehow manages to escape and not get caught on camera until he leaves Metro property and they deploy extra cops on the affected line for a few days. 

These cops then play candy crush or move into the cab, close the door, and have a raucous conversation with the driver while pissing out the window.

Hey! A blue-flu weekend for Metro. That'll be fun. Drivers are all staging a sick-out Friday-Sunday, which should destroy any hope of getting around DC.

So I removed the Metro app that updated me every time there was a problem on the system and it doubled my battery life. LOL.

I was in Austin, Texas recently and WMATA is a joke there too.

Missus RC tried to Metro to Tenleytown the other right nd turned back after a fifteen minute "please stand back from the door" delay.

I love that our system is so bad it's actually a joke around the country. People mock it in New Orleans! And their transportation system is a notch below Beirut.
