I wish, for the sake of my perpetually beleaguered home state, that this was a joke. Well, technically Cynthia McKinney is a joke... so maybe it is.
http://www.runcynthiarun.org/For those of you not "in the know" about this lady, she has cultivated a reputation of being completely batshit and it's a mystery to everyone how she manages to keep getting re-elected. McKinney is Georgia's punchline to every joke about mentally incompetent politicians. Here are a few things she's noted for:
-During the 2000 presidential campaign, McKinney wrote that "Al Gore's Negro tolerance level has never been too high. I've never known him to have more than one black person around him at any given time." The Gore campaign responded by pointing out that Gore's campaign manager was black.
-In March of 2002, in an interview on a Berkely, CA radio station, McKinney insinuated that President Bush had advance knowledge of the 9/11 attacks and did nothing to prevent them. A few weeks after this insinuation, she stated: "A complete investigation might reveal" that "President Bush or members of his administration have personally profited from the attacks of 9-11."
-During a nasty 1996 congressional campaign with racial tension on both sides, she called supporters of her Republican opponent "holdovers from the Civil War days" and "a ragtag group of neo-Confederates." Never mind that her opponent was Jewish.
I pulled those few examples from Wikipedia and an old Slate article and they by no means cover all of the, mostly racially oriented, insanities that have been uttered by McKinney. She's widely seen as a slightly-unstable, racial conspiracy nut... she finds racism around every corner. Even by the staunchest liberals in this deeply red state tend to not take her very seriously.
Anyway... hah... gird your loins, America.
