Too bad you folks in the US can't enjoy rum with its natural partner: a handmade Cuban stogie.

Well, unless you know someone coming back from an international trip, or you stock up in Cuba/Mexico/uh...Florida.

You people put way to much stock into Cuban cigars. Granted still good, but you can get a Dominican cigar just as good with no trouble. Most of the good cigar makers left Cuba a long time ago and are making Dominicans now.

I maintain that it's not the maker, it's the way its made. Something about being 60 years behind the technology and corporate attitude of cigar-making gives Cubans that special dash of indentured peasant.

Hell, look at Perique, one of my two favorites -- made in one place in the world. You could take a road trip, Cass!

not a big cigar smoker, but it sounds interesting enough. i'm such a louisiana newbie that i still get off on calling counties "parishes." as if each one had its own head priest or something.

perique is pipe tobacco, used in blends. (It'd be way too strong to smoke unblended.) I bet each parish still has its own Catholic priest in charge, although the church may have changed their parish's borders more recently than LA has.

Well, soil and climate is sort of a given. Like those grapes, and coffee, it's pretty specific. There's lots that happens between them growing it and you smoking it, though, and that's where things go wrong (or right).

Nacho left half a bottle of Gosling's Black Seal Rum at my house. I'm now a pirate. Discuss.

Oh! Just replied in the Eggnog thread.
My Gosling's conversation was just about six months ago. It's not my new favorite rum. Except the guy who converted me is horrified at the stuff I mix it with.

It's pretty tasty. Not too spicy.
I sipped a bit before mixing it with eggnog and found it fairly smooth. I've never been much of a rum guy, but mixed right, it's great.
