According to Bush, 2004 was a mandate. You know, a 200 vote mandate!

Well, I mean according to, you know, figures.  And he had a larger margin in 2004 than liberals seem comfortable admitting.  But it was still the close split.

I'm talking the seemingly very likely dream (at the moment) -- Obama wins with a popular in the high 50's, and gets a filibuster-proof Democratic Congress.  That's a mandate.  1984 was a mandate.  1972... Etc. We can't hope to reach for a landslide like those, but it'll be nice to see something that isn't split down the middle.

But it wasn't.  They can say what they want.  My keychain is a mandate!  There.

But the 06 mid-terms returned a very narrow majority.  While I still think Pelosi pulled all her punches because she's a liar and a coward, I realize why she pulled her punches -- subtract the right-leaning Democrats and she had a minority, really.  I'm surprised she passed what she did.

Just because they use a loose definition, it doesn't change the definition.
