This movie series only hits my radar when trailers come out. Apparently though, each installment makes a mint.

They've basically remade the single worst of the original movies three times in a row. It's almost the definition of insanity at this point.

Is Mendez I from the book or an actual Spanish explorer from history?

Actually, I have it wrong. Woody is playing Kolp. Mendez was his lieutenant.

Kolp and Mendez were the leaders of the humans in Battle for the Planet of the Apes. His descendant, Mendez XXVI, was the leader of the mutants in Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

Note: The original Planet of the Apes book has nothing in common with the movie franchise (though the TV versions are more in line with it).

Nothing new (and probably posted somewhere in this thread already), but some interesting nuggets here in the long, sad, terrible saga of trying to cash in on a 50 year old surprise hit:

I was just beginning to embrace the reboot franchise with War for the Planet of the Apes and then they go and reveal 10 year old Nova. I was even willing to accept Woody Harrelson as Mendez I. But Nova's a bit much.

The right thing to have done would be to make a 1000 year time jump for the fourth movie, crash the Icarus, and go right into full reboot!

But...who am I?

Oh, and, War is a weird movie. Moody, full of PTSD flashbacks. A sweeping score plays over wartime horror. Caesar is on a lonely Death Wish sort of mission. It's like they wanted to make Dunkirk but were forced to make this instead.

I am VERY happy with this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ_HvTBaFoo

So all the modern Apes movies have referenced the Liberty 1/Icarus in some way or another. In the first movie it was very obvious -- a news report about how the Icarus had been lost.

That's Charlton Heston's ship from the 1968 movie. RISE mentioned Taylor by name as the commander of the Icarus mission. In DAWN the lost Icarus mission was mentioned in dialogue. I don't know about WAR because I was far too busy cutting "please stop destroying my childhood" into my thigh.

So now we're getting closer to a full on reboot of 1968 Apes. And I like this idea. Looking at this, I'd say we're still in the prequels. WAR was basically BATTLE redone with a super budget, and now KINGDOM looks like it's more of that prequel country. Here's my hope:

KINGDOM picks up well after WAR. The Apes are in charge but, as we saw in the 70s prequels, they're living tenuously with the humans. This relationship is about to go awry, though, because Humans suck and Gorillas can't be trusted. So KINGDOM can be all about that social breakdown and -- please -- let's end with the Icarus careening down from the sky. Roll credits. In two years, Ryan Reynolds does a seriocomic turn as a rebooted Taylor in RETURN TO THE PLANET OF THE APES!

This has been one of the smartest franchises in recent memory. They got us all involved in what are essentially prequels before grooming us for a full on reboot. Genius.
