BSG DVD set (also with season two spoilers)
« on: June 30, 2005, 09:16:49 PM »
Finally!  Five months after the region 2 release, Best Buy is getting season one of BSG.  The normal retail version hits in fucking September... But here's the thing.  The Best Buy set will be the UK version of the show, which means the episodes will be uncut, you'll get .002 seconds of Starbucks tit and, dear god, you'll get the REAL fucking theme song, not the insane US theme song.

$49.99 (sniff) hitting the shelves on July 26th.

So, okay, that's a high price for a 13 episode series.  But, having watched both versions, you want the UK version of BSG.  The changes may be subtle, but you feel them.  Hell, it'sworth it for the theme song.  God.  You know, why fuck with the episodes?  Why do we need to edit 2-5 minutes to make room for commercials?  And why do we need to change the theme song?

Anyway, I'm going to bite the bullet and give Worst Buy my money.  Then I guess I have to visit Team Yotoc again for a BSG masturbation fest.  Once he fixes his retarded DVD player.

As best I can tell, the mini-series is not included.  Though there's no problem getting the cheapie used version.  That was done in the US, so it hasn't been hacked down to 13 minutes to make room for the commercials.  It was 13 minutes for commercial breaks to begin with, so it seems natural.

It's whenever she was having sex and got disturbed.  Was that the Zack flashback?  In the UK version you get a brief glimpse.  You almost have to go frame by frame.  US censors caught it, though.

I'll put this up, just to make sure I'm not the only one who'll spend $50 on the Best Buy release in July to own a 13 episode series where the only difference between $50 and $30 in September is a different theme song and about six minutes overall of edited scenes.

Best Buy cover art (same as the UK cover art):

Okay, what the hell is this "real scifi" thing? What's real science fiction? Space 2001? Because there's a difference between hard science fiction and sci-fi. I like BSG and Firefly, because they're well-written, with spaceships and fun shit like explosions and gunfights. The reality of their science doesn't bother me. Star Trek is light science fiction, and I'm less satisfied with series as I am with individual episodes (most of DS9 I could take or leave, but "Far Beyond the Stars" is my favorite Star Trek episode, ever). The Stargate series never interested me, though I enjoyed the movie when I was younger and suspect I would even more now that I have some understanding of mythology.

I'm just giving you a hard time, Matt. I'm the issue, not you. I simply don't geek out over BSG, Farscape, Firefly, and all the new wave TV sci-fi. I tried, but I just don't get hooked.

In fact, I'm nota  sci-fi guy at all unless it's the whiz bang Star Wars type of stuff or horror movies setin a sci-fi setting. (which are horror movies, not sci-fi.) I dug Asimov when I was younger, but found him a bit stuffy.

Real sci-fi from the RC school? Kubrick's 2001, The Day the Earth Stood Still, War of the Worlds (both the 1953 George Pal and the new Spielberg films), Also stuff like Esacpe from New York, Mad Max and all the other dystopian future jazz. Those kick ass.

See, not really a sci-fi guy at all.

Best Buy makes it official:

Quote
Battlestar Galactica Season One is the season aired on SkyOne in the UK featuring a different opening than the United States. Previously only available on DVD in the UK, this four disc set includes all 13 episodes plus deleted scenes. These DVDs have been formatted to be compatible with most North American DVD players.

Okay, so it's out... And Best Buy is offering $15 off if you get Earth 2 or Cleopatra 2525.  So BSG is 41 and Earth 2 is 37.  But...I decided against it.  I have the UK versions downloaded and backed up on DVD, and the US set coming out September 20th looks so nice, doesn't it?  The mini-series included, uncut episodes, special features.  And it's only 41 on Amazon, plus I have a $25 coupon I need to use on some future order...

Ah, what a shame.  Now I have to go buy something else.

Except...now I'm told that there's a lengthy Serenity preview included in the Best Buy set.

I'm just going to put together all these previews so I have the whole movie.  Half of all the Firefly fans have seen the movie anyway.
