Turner Classic Movies
« on: April 17, 2006, 12:28:17 PM »
Anyone else have TCM?  I'm starting to get into it.  It's kind of creepy actually because there are no commercials aside from programming spots.  The movies just begin and end and in those few moments of off time they'll sometimes show old shorts or trailers.  And everything's uncut, which usually isn't a big deal because most of the movies they show don't have a lot of blood sex or cursing, but everyonce in a while something slips out.  It's a little overwhelming, the amount of movies that have been made that no one knows anything about, gangster movies and musicals and all that other stuff from when actors signed contracts with a studio instead of to a single movie.

I dunno.  Mostly I just keep it on all the time even if i'm not sitting down and watching it.  There's a rhythm there that's been lost.  Plus the music is cool.  "BABABAHHHBUM BREEEEEEEEE  welcome to Our Fine Moving Picture with INTRIGUE SUSPENSE and ROMANTIC CAVORTING!"

Lana Turner
Rita Hayworth
Gary Cooper

"THE GALLANTRY OF THE ENGLISH COURT BROUGHT TO YOU IN SUPRACOLORIZATION!"

etc.

ok, so I'm out of it today.  sue me.

Whenever I'm on the house/dog-sit detail, I end up with TCM, yeah.  Leaving only to watch Dog the Bounty Hunter and Animal Police!

I caught this weird John Wayne airplane thriller once.  Never heard of it before...  It was weird and painful.

The reason I don't have cable at home is because, on the house-sit detail, I spend the entire time on the couch, day and night, watching shit like TCM and Animal Planet and those off-brand Discovery channels.

this was on this morning:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033149/

Bogart as a truck driver? can't miss!

I just love the comedic writing in old movies.

Bogie: I'll have a t-bone, rare, and make it good this time.  The last one you gave me coulda been used as a manhole cover.

Waitress: This one'll be so tender it'll wrap its arms around your neck and kiss ya.

George Raft after kissing a woman dame: Don't practice that on anyone else, you save it for me.

Pretty crazy movie, standard "let's shove years of these people's lives into a 90 minute feature that starts off as a buddy picture then ends as a courtroom drama."

"THE DOORS! THE DOORS MADE ME DO IT THE DOORS! HAHAHAHAHHAHA"

Some of those older movies are quite good. The problem is allowing yourself to fall into a zone where the cinematic and social conventions of past eras don't jar you out of it.

I'm only at 446 titles in the queue.  Let's assume roughly six movies a week, that'll get it to me in 2007.
