The first two episodes fucked me up. But then they sat down with the investigators, they asked all the right questions. The fourth episode unravels the whole thing and...spoils the scariness of the whole thing. They exhaustively piece together her final days.

It's kind of like the Winnebago Man documentary where they finally track down the guy and he's this okay dude who's like, what?

We just finished this last night. The creepiness of the elevator video is only offset by the depression that sets in about the whole thing toward the end. It sort of reminded me of this movie my wife and I watched one weekend back when we first started dating: https://youtu.be/QE_RFzXq4Ls

I'm just stuck with the idea of how horrible it must be to die in a water tank hallucinating your balls off.

I regret watching it. This was my favorite creeper mystery story for so long... And now, yeah, it's just sad. The video was edited and slowed down on purpose (and for perfectly reasonable reasons), the internet was simply stupid and illiterate, and no one online bothered to do a lick of research or background. I loved how all the cops were like, well... Yeah, this is nothing.

And super sad to hear about the story of that death metal guy. Jesus.

Yes! Morbid! I felt horrible for him. But, I mean... if moonlighting as a black metal musician and posting some of the shit he did, I have a hard time believing his shock at the accusations is totally genuine. This is the same genre of musicians from Norway (Mayhem) who set fire to churches and went to prison for murdering one another.

Just finished Crime Scene last night. While I’m glad they really leaned away from the supernatural explanations, I found the whole web sleuth phenomenon disturbing. The third episode where they just had them all expounding on theories and getting crazy worked up was almost unwatchable. I suppose they did exactly what we did, but as you guys mentioned, we never hounded a Mexican death metal guy to nearly commit suicide.

The ending was somber but maybe that’s best. I thought the undercurrent of “maybe we all need to stop overreacting to shit” was valid and timely.

I loved the blonde hotel manager who was just nonplussed by everything. “It’s the Cecil Hotel, man. Dead chick in the water tank barely raises the needle on shit I’m concerned about.”

She was hilarious! I loved them grilling her about the court case and why no one did anything to help crazy-daisy Lam and she was all, well, uh, ALL the residents were dangerously crazy.

Not “scary unexplained” but we watched Netflix’s Night Stalker series last night. That thing is super well done. Gripping from start to finish.

Well, mostly from start to finish. The third episode of these four part crime docs is where these things start to falter. With Night Stalker, I think it was the part of the investigation they were at. And real life almost never had the narrative roundness that fiction has. So the filmmakers try to apply that “second-act/post-midpoint structure, and it’s always weird to me.

That’s said, the four part “hour Kong” format for these stories very much works for me.

Best headline I came across for this.  "Crime Scene Hotel Docuseries is a Crime Story in Search of a Crime"

I felt exactly the same way... we almost quit watching after episode 3 because the internet sleuths were so annoying. It felt like they were stretching to fill a four-part series in what easily could have been three episodes.

Night Stalker series was EXCELLENT. For me, something is good if it keeps me up at night and this absolutely did. Of course I'd heard of him before, but I had no idea how crazy violent this was... and on what a short timeline it occurred.

The cinematography was excellent, too... albeit disturbing. It looked to me like they took actual crime scene photos and then built them out in 3D for many of the scenes. At least that's the impression I got from it.

Also, with respects to internet sleuths, if you want to watch a great docuseries (also extremely disturbing) check out Don't F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer on Netflix if you haven't already.

Don' F*ck With Cats has long been on my list, but I'm squeamish as I get older and I heard it's gonzo.

There is nothing direct that you see, so it’s all left up to your imagination, but there are several very disturbing segments.
