The Fifth Season - Hugo winning fantasy. It's complicated and awesome so far.

Moving on to Ghost Fleet

This is a "novel of the next world war," but it's intended to be a cautionary tale about how that war could happen, based on real world threats (such as malware disabling our security agencies, etc.). So it's both cautionary tale and jingoistic lunacy. Actually quite fun -- recommended highly for the conspiracy nut.

Reading and loving An island to Oneself, in which the author strands himself on a desert island for several years after WWII.

Gave The Late Bloomer a try for a friend. post-Ya post-apocalypse.

It has no chapter breaks! Difficult read. Gave up. Blah.

Now moving on to How to Sit, from tiny Baltimore press Mason Jar.

I like it. File under troubled DC memoir...

Another short one...and not too good at all.

Apocalypse, Darling

Now moving on to the conclusion of the red Sparrow trilogy:

The Kremlin's Candidate

It reads as expected... Which is fine!

Ashamed to admit that I have never read Jaws... So...

Here we go!

Wow...Jaws was terrible! It was actually a story about Ellen Brody's malaise and, when we (rarely) had a shark sighting, I found myself wishing it would eat every sad sack motherfucker in this book.

While GS was down, I read the latest Becky Chambers book -- pure bubblegum sci-fi, but terrific: Record of a Spaceborn Few.

Now I'm reading... Fellowship of the Ring! For the first time since I was a pre-teen.

Next time we're drunk together, let's talk about Jaws the novel as a poor Harold Robbins knock-off that happens to have a shark in it.

And, even then, barely.

There's a bit of that First Blood in it, too. Where all the "heroes" from the movie are actually despicable. I loved that Rambo was the bad guy in First Blood the book and the sheriff was the good guy the audience was meant to identify with.

I'm reading textbooks all the time... which in some ways is more book reading than I've done in years.
